What is obesity?

Obesity is defined as an excessive increase in adipose tissue in the body. The degree of obesity is determined by the Body Mass Index (BMI), which is the quotient that results if we divide the weight (in kilograms) by the square of height (in meters). Normal values are considered, between 18.5 and 24.9. Values between 25 to 29.9 kg / m2 identify / characterize / make the person overweight, while when the BMI is ≥30 kg / m2 the person is considered obese. BMI values above 35 indicate a problem of severe obesity, which predisposes to dangerous complications and is now called, morbid obesity.

Of course, an important role in the assessment / evaluation of the disease and the upcoming complications in health, is the distribution / location of fat in the body.

Specifically, abdominal obesity increases the body's resistance to insulin, disrupts lipid metabolism and causes hypertension problems. These conditions affect the health of the heart and blood vessels, leading to atherosclerosis and eventually to cardiovascular disease.

What causes morbid obesity?

Its main cause is the increased intake of calories with the diet, in an amount that exceeds the calories needed by the body to meet its daily energy needs. Excess calories are stored in our body as fat.

Another cause is poor nutrition, the wrong eating habits of the family, which due to the modern way of life at a fast pace. It forces us to look for fast and easy diets with pre-made or fast meals, with meals in fast food restaurants resulting in increased intake of foods high in fat and sugar as opposed to low fiber intake.

Reduced physical activity and lack of exercise are also considered to be a significant culprit for the onset of the disease. Modern means of transportation and the use of the car have abolished walking as a means of transportation, the various household appliances which, although simplifying work in effort and time but, at the same time, reduce physical activity, office work which is essentially a sedentary type, The very way of life that, in order to cope financially, works beyond eight hours, making it unbearable and extremely exhausting to work out / exercise even in the gym, they contribute to the sedentary life and contribute to the rapid increase of obesity.

Finally, of course, in more rare cases, there are pathological causes that contribute to the development of obesity, such as some endocrine diseases (eg thyroid or adrenal diseases), psychological disorders that lead to polyphagia or bulimia, as well as the reception of various medicines as well as heredity.

Prevention and treatment

Obesity is considered a disease and thus after a complete medical examination in order to exclude possible pathological causes. The specialist doctor-nutritionist will recommend a specific diet.

In some cases, along with diet, medication can be administered, but always under the strict control of a specialist, while in severe obesity with complications, its treatment is recommended surgically.

However, the best approach to treating obesity always remains prevention, which must begin in childhood and must continue throughout life.

According to scientific data, it is clear that the obese child, if there is no effective intervention, becomes an obese teenager and develops into an obese adult with increased morbidity and mortality.

The percentages for the health of the adult population in our country are particularly disappointing as 22.5% of the population (18.2% of women and 26% of men) are obese and 35.2% (30% of women and more than 40% of men) are overweight, while in addition Greece is considered one of the European countries with the highest rates of childhood obesity.

So change,

 eating habits, diet and physical activity,

Θέ adoption of the model of the Mediterranean diet,

 nutrition education as our diet must be balanced, contain all the necessary nutrients for the body, without excreting anything,

 VARIETY - BALANCE - EVERYTHING BY METRO!

Ρηση maintaining the right body weight,

 increase physical activity with small changes in our daily routine that include more movement, such as walking 30 minutes a day.
